Anaïs Mitchell is to release a book based on her hit musical Hadestown.

The eight-time Tony Award-winning musical is currently running at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre having previously played at London’s National Theatre in 2018.

Now an accompanying book, Working on a Song: The Lyrics of HADESTOWN, is on its way filled with lyrics and stories from Hadestown from its author, songwriter Anaïs Mitchell with a foreword by Steve Earle.

You can pre-order the book online here.

The book will be released on 6 October 2020.

A teaser reads: “In this book, Anaïs Mitchell takes readers inside her more than decade’s-long process of building the musical from the ground up—detailing her inspiration, breaking down the lyrics, and opening up the process of creation that gave birth to Hadestown.

“Fans and newcomers alike will love this deeply thoughtful, revealing look at how the songs from “the underground” evolved, and became the songs we sing again and again.”

Hadestown is a new musical with book, music and lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell, developed with Rachel Chavkin, based on Mitchell’s 2010 concept album.

Following the intertwining love stories of young dreamers Orpheus & Eurydice and King Hades & his wife Persephone, Hadestown takes audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.
