The In The Heights movie is on its way – from the cast to the first trailer here’s all you need to know.

A big screen version of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical will hit cinemas in 2021.

Set in New York’s largely Hispanic-American neighbourhood of Washington Heights, the musical follows a number of residents over the course of three days as they discover what it means to be home.

The film adaption features a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes – who wrote the musical’s book – with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In The Heights movie cast

In The Heights 2021 movie cast will be led by Anthony Ramos (Hamilton, A Star is Born) as Usnavi with Corey Hawkins (Six Degrees of Separation) as Benny, Melissa Barrera (Vida) as Vanessa and singer-songwriter Leslie Grace as Nina.

Further casting includes Daphne Rubin-Vega as Daniela, Stephanie Beatriz as Carla and Dascha Polanco as Cuca, Olga Merediz as Abuela Claudia, Jimmy Smits as Kevin Rosario, Gregory Diaz IV as Sonny, Noah Catala as Graffiti Pete and Marc Anthony as Mr. de la Vega.

Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel Miranda will appear in the role of Mr. Piragüero aka Piragua Guy.

In The Heights UK release date

Jon M. Chu will direct the film adaption, which had originally been due for release in June 2020.

However on March 24 it was announced that the release date had been pushed back. Currently the scheduled UK release date is 18 June 2021.

Miranda said: “With the uncertainty in our world, right now, the release of In The Heights is being postponed.

“When we can safely gather again, flags in hand, we will be there, enjoying this movie in theaters. We’ll have the premiere uptown. The best summer of our lives, together. Patience & Faith. Paciencia y Fe.”

A full synopsis of the film reads:

Lights up on Washington Heights… The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community.

At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
