A film adaption of Tony-nominated musical The Prom is on its way to Netflix – here’s all we know so far.

Ryan Murphy is directing and producing a big screen version of the stage show, which ran on Broadway between 2018 and 2019.

It tells the story of a group of struggling Broadway actors who try to make a name for themselves by helping out high school teenager Emma who is banned from taking her girlfriend to prom.

The Prom Netflix release date

It’s been confirmed that The Prom musical will be released on Netflix worldwide on Friday, December 11.

In the UK, new movies and shows typically go on Netflix from 8AM.

The Prom movie cast

An all star cast has been confirmed for The Prom on Netflix.

Meryl Streep will play the role of Broadway actress Dee Dee Allen and James Corden will appear as her on stage co-star Barry Glickman. Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells are to play Broadway performers Angie Dickinson and Trent Oliver respectively.

Kevin Chamberlin will play the group’s publicist Sheldon Saperstein with Keegan-Michael Key as high school principal Tom Hawkins.

Broadway’s Ariana DeBose will star in the role of Alyssa, daughter of the head of the PTA and secret girlfriend of fellow high school student Emma, who will be played by newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman.

Completing the core cast are Kerry Washington as Ms. Greene, Logan Riley Hassel as Kaylee, Sofia Deler as Shelby, Nico Greetham as Nick Boomer and Nathaniel J. Potvin as Kevin.

The book, music and lyrics will be written by the Broadway creative team – Matthew Sklar (music), Chad Beguelin (lyrics & book) and Bob Martin (book) – based on the original concept by Jack Viertel.

The film will feature the same score from the stage show together with a new original song.

The Prom originally held its worldwide premiere in Atlanta in 2016 before transferring to Broadway in November, 2018 where it played for more than 300 performances.

The original Broadway production scooped numerous awards and nominations, picking up Outstanding Musical at the 2019 Drama Desk Awards.

A novel based on the musical has also been released.
