Tier Three Sisters: New adaptation of Chekhov classic to play The Hope Theatre

A modern retelling of Chekhov’s Three Sisters is to play The Hope Theatre this August.

Tier Three Sisters is described as a “modern man-free adaptation of the Chekhov classic”, written by Knuckledown.

Directed by Matt Strachan, the piece will run at the Islington venue between 9 – 15 August and star a cast of three – Bryony Davies (Masha), Chloe Metcalfe (Olga) and Chloe Wade (Irina).

In a small back garden in Lancashire, the seasons pass in lockdown. Three siblings frustrate and fortify each other, reminiscing about precedented times as the world shrinks and crumbles around them, figuratively but also literally on stage.

As the sisters pine for their near-yet-so-far equivalent of Moscow (Manchester city centre) the play itself yearns to wriggle free of its own formal origins, breaking the fourth wall and bending its own realist logic.

In doing so, it questions modern ideas around ambition (thwarted or otherwise), responsibility and loneliness through a female lens and a lockdown aperture, magnifying issues pushed to the fore by the year we’ve all just experienced.

Tier Three Sisters will be produced by Tanya Truman with design by Ana Webb-Sanchez, lighting design by Mattis Larsen, sound design by Kristina Kapilin and stage management by Gianluca Zona.

Tickets are available online now from https://www.thehopetheatre.com/productions/tier-three-sisters/

The production forms part of the venue’s reopening season.
