Wicked movie first details revealed as casting begins

Wicked musical movie release date, cast and spoilers

The first details about Wicked’s long-awaited screen adaption have been revealed.

Wicked reveals the ‘true untold story’ behind the Wizard Of Oz and just what happened before Dorothy dropped in.

Featuring some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs, such as Defying Gravity and Popular, Wicked has proved a huge hit in both London’s West End and on Broadway for almost two decades.

Now a movie version is finally on its way after many years of rumours.

Directed by Stephen Daldry, Wicked is currently scheduled for release in cinemas on December 22, 2021.

The musical’s composer Stephen Schwartz has been working on new songs, adding to the award-winning score of the current stage show.

Schwartz has also been working with book writer Winnie Holzman to develop the story for the screen.

He told Variety: “In order to do something that will work on its own merits, you have to do something different.

“The only concern is people who would be coming expecting to see a filmed version of the play. They’re not going to see that.”

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Schwartz said the script was still being worked on “but the process is heating up” with discussions about casting now at an early stage.

While no names have been confirmed for the cast of the Wicked movie right now, original Elphaba Idina Menzel has ruled herself out.

Menzel, who won a Tony for her role as the green-skinned witch, laughed when asked if she would be involved in the adaption: “No, not really.”

For now, you can catch Wicked on stage in both London’s West End and on Broadway in New York.

Wicked has been running at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre for 13 years – and recently extended until May 2020.

Over 500,000 new tickets were made available for performances Monday-Sunday.
