The musical Waitress, adapted from the movie with the same title, narrates the tale of Jenna, a pie-making virtuoso and waitress, aspiring to escape her limited small-town life and tumultuous marriage.

Sara Bareilles, the composer of the musical’s score, starred as Jenna Hunterson in a live Broadway performance captured on film.

The filmed version will be released in select US cinemas from 7 December. Further releases in the UK are yet to be announced.

The Waitress proshot showcases a talented ensemble including Charity Angél Dawson, Caitlin Houlahan, Drew Gehling, Dakin Matthews, Eric Anderson, Joe Tippett, and Christopher Fitzgerald.

Penned by Jessie Nelson with Diane Paulus at the helm, Waitress had a successful Broadway stint from 2016 to 2020, racking up over 1,500 shows and earning four Tony nominations. The show made a brief return from September 2021 to January 2022, during which the live filming occurred.

In the West End, Waitress debuted in February 2019 with Katharine McPhee leading the cast, but the production was halted by the pandemic, later embarking on a UK tour.

Bareilles had previously taken on the Jenna role on Broadway multiple times and also joined the London cast before the global theatre shutdown.
