Frozen The Musical coming to London’s West End in 2020
Frozen The Musical will land on the West End in autumn 2020, Disney has announced.
After opening on Broadway in 2018, the stage adaption of the hit animated movie will premiere in London next year.
Frozen will play at the The Theatre Royal Drury Lane from autumn 2020, with the theatre currently undergoing renovations.
Casting has yet to be confirmed, but Disney has said the new production will feature a new British cast.
Frozen: The Musical features all the big songs from the movie – such as Let It Go, For The First Time In Forever and Love Is An Open Door – plus new songs written for the stage.
Husband and wife team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez penned the score for the movie and were brought back to write new music for the stage adaption.
Explaining the process, Kristen told BBC News: “For instance, if you think about Elsa, you don’t really hear much from her at all during the first part of the movie, the way you experience her story is through close-ups, through looks of alarm in her eyes.
“In the theatre, you can’t do that, because some people will be 100 yards away, so they can’t zero-in on the eyes, so that’s where the songs come in. They help you understand what’s going on in her heart and in her head.”
Meanwhile, director Michael Grandage has revealed plans to update the production for the West End.
“We don’t want to just replicate a production. We want it to evolve and respond to the time of watching it,” he told the BBC. “And so London will offer us an opportunity to make some adjustments, enhance and develop everything.
“We want to give a bespoke production in England. On one level it could be technical, the magic we use in the show, the spectacle… we want to make sure we evolve with the technology that’s available to us.”
Tickets to Frozen London are expected to go on sale later this year.
