The Broadway musicals coming to the West End
Here’s a run down on the latest hit Broadway musicals that are heading to London’s West End.
Mean Girls
Fresh from the recent movie adaptation, Mean Girls is coming to the West End this summer!
The stage show begins previews at the Savoy Theatre from 6 June 2024 and is currently booking to 27 October. Casting is to be confirmed.
Based on the hit film of the same name, the musical has a book by the original movie’s screenwriter Tina Fey (30 Rock) with music by composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde). The production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).
MJ
New jukebox musical MJ tells the story of Michael Jackson using his back catalogue of hits. The show opens in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre from 6 March
Leading the West End production in the title role will be Tony-award winner Myles Frost who originated the role on Broadway.
With a book by Lynn Nottage, the show premiered at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York in December 2021 and won four Tony Awards from ten nominations.
Some Like It Hot
New musical Some Like It Hot is set to open in the West End after closing on Broadway in December.
Based on the 1959 film of the same name, Some Like It Hot narrates the escapades of two musicians who go undercover as women and become part of an all-female band as a means to elude the clutches of the mafia, who they’ve inadvertently encountered following a murder.
Producers have revealed plans for a US tour in 2024 before a planned West End production in 2025.
Shucked
Following the end of its recent Broadway run, new musical Shucked is to open in the West End in 2024.
The show, with a book by Robert Horn (Tootsie, 13) and songs by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, will be produced by Cameron Mackintosh.
A theatre, dates and further details are to be announced.
Next To Normal
More than 15 years after its Broadway debut, Next To Normal is officially heading to the West End fresh from its recent UK premiere. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical will run from 18 June – 21 September 2024 at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
Written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, Next to Normal is an intimate exploration of family and loss. At its heart is Diana Goodman, a suburban wife and mother living with bipolar disorder and haunted by her past.
Those on the cast are Caissie Levy, Trevor Dion Nicholas, Jack Ofrecio, Jamie Parker, Jack Wolfe and Eleanor Worthington-Cox.
Hadestown
The hit Broadway musical – which previously ran in London at the National Theatre in 2018 – is back in the capital.
Hadestown runs in the West End from at the Lyric Theatre where it is currently booking to 22 December 2024.
The West End cast of Hadestown will feature Dónal Finn as Orpheus, Grace Hodgett-Young as Eurydice, Melanie La Barrie as Hermes, Gloria Onitiri as Persephone and Zachary James as Hades.
The Fates will be played by Madeline Charlemagne, Allie Daniel and Bella Brown.
Jagged Little Pill (allegedly)
Jagged Little Pill is a jukebox musical based on the 1995 Alanis Morissette album of the same name.
Following its Broadway run a West End transfer was announced for autumn 2022.
However a theatre and dates were never confirmed. As it stands, there’s still no word yet on the West End plans for the show.
