Theatre in September: What’s on online and in person

If you’re looking to get your theatre fix this month, here’s what’s on in September 2020.

In person

Sleepless The Musical – Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, London, until September 27

The Last Five Years – The Minack Theatre, Cornwall, September 15-19
An outdoor production of Jason Robert Brown’s cult musical starring Emma Kingston and Waylon Jacobs. Tickets online here.

Private Peaceful – The Barn Theatre, Cirencester, September 10-27
Indoor performances will resume at The Barn Theatre later this month with a production of Private Peaceful based on the modern classic by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse, The Butterfly Lion). Set against the backdrop of World War One, tickets are available here.

Hair In Concert – The Turbine Theatre, September 4-6
A concert production of Hair is to play as part of the Turbine Theatre’s new outdoor season. Directed by Arlene Phillips, the cast features Millie O’Connell, Grace Mouat, Jordan Luke Gage, Jodie Steele, Matt Croke, Layton Williams, Danielle Fiamanya and Blake Patrick Anderson as Woof. West End Musical Drive In Concerts – The Drive In, Troubadour Meridian Water, London, September 5, 12, 19 and 26
A host of West End performers will appear in concert on Saturdays with line ups including the stars of musicals Six, Aladdin and Wicked. Tickets and full line up here.

Jesus Christ Superstar Concert – Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London, until September 27
A socially distanced concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar is playing Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. In addition to seats in the auditorium, the concert will also be streamed ‘live’ via a giant screen on the venue’s lawn. Get tickets online here.

Pippin – The Garden Theatre at The Eagle in Vauxhall, London, September 8-October 11
The new version of the classic musical, approved by composer Stephen Schwartz, will feature a cast of six. Tickets are available online here.

Let Us Be Heard – September 4, 8PM
Guildford Fringe is to host a night of live music from the theatre industry on their YouTube channel, featuring 15 performers including Maria Coyne and Charlotte Jaconelli.

Hanif Kureishi’s My Beautiful Laundrette – From September 2, Curve Online.
Based on Kureishi’s iconic and Oscar-nominated screenplay of the same name, an archive recoding of the multi-award nominated stage production of My Beautiful Laundrette will be released on Curve’s website at 6PM on Wednesday September 2. The theatre says it will be available to stream until the venue is able to reopen its doors.

Nicole Raquel Dennis and Sam Tutty in concert – September 20, 5PM
The stars of Dear Evan Hansen’s West End production will appear alongside one another in a live streamed concert at the Phoenix Arts Club Tickets are available to purchase online here up to 4PM on the day of the performance.

Before After – September 25-26
New musical Before After is to stream live from the Southwark Playhouse in September. Rosalie Craig (Company) and Hadley Fraser (City of Angels) will star in the piece, which will play three performances on September 25 and 26. Book tickets here.

West End Unplugged – Wednesdays, September 9 – 30
A host of West End performers will sing in a series of online concerts, raising funds for a trio of charities: Backup, Help Musicians and Theatre Artists Fund. Four shows will take place on Wednesdays weekly between September 9 and 30. You’ll be able to watch via the West End Unplugged website here.

Faith Healer – September 16-29
A revival starring Michael Sheen, David Threlfall and Indira Varma at The Old Vic is to stream online. Tickets are available online here priced between £10 and £20.
